III. Bill Magargle made a motion to invite the 2nd Pennsylvania Reserves to march with us in the Strasburg Memorial Day Parade; it was seconded and voted all in favor.
IV. Committee Reports:
a. Quilt:
i. The Pennypacker quilt is at Dianne Wepy’s home to be completed.
ii. On April 16 Pennypacker is having a Farm Weekend for four hours. Luann Swonger is going. Since our quilt will not be finished she will be taking other quilts. Kim made a motion that we not take the quilt to the April 16 event. It was seconded and voted all in favor. We will take it to the Pennypacker event in June.
iii. Since Luann is holding the ticket money for the quilt raffle, Kim made a motion that the ticket money we collected along with the tickets is given to the treasurer so we can write a check. It was seconded and voted all in favor.
iv. All those who helped with the Pennypacker quilt who were at the meeting signed a swatch of fabric to be sewed into the quilt. We still need Kay Lingle and Luann Swonger’s signatures.
v. Diane informed us the Unit quilt is basted together and ready to go in the frame.
vi. Kim Hostetter will write an article to go in the Civil War News regarding the Pennypacker quilt. She wants to take a picture of the group who worked on it. Either Don Wepy or Nancy Koch will take the picture with their digital camera. There is a new magazine called the Civil War Historian that is all about preservation. We may put an article in that one also.
b. Website: Our Webmaster, Vince Slaugh said our website is great and that we should check it out. Go to http://unionguard.cciu.org.
V. Old Business:
a. The Patriot Daughter’s box is small. Kim questioned about getting another one so we can keep clothing in one and canned goods and food in another one. The small one was $44 with shipping and tax. We have $158 profit from the Landis Valley Event that was not spent. Diane Wepy is sewing hospital shirts and drawers and Scott Macbeth is making labels for cans and bottles. We have lots of donations. If we have more than one box different families could keep a box. Keep your name on your item donated. Scott will keep a list. Donations are welcome. A suggestion was made to purchase another small and a medium sized box. Motion was made, seconded and voted all in favor. The treasurer will order them on Monday morning. Kim will see Charlie Smithgall to make a copy of the original Patriot Daughter stencil. There is a website where we can have a Mylar stencil made for under $20. We will stencil the side of the boxes.
b. Newsletter: Heidi and Pam are still having computer problems. We have not had a newsletter in awhile. Vince offered to help them out until they get it repaired. He said there is a lot of duplication with the website and the newsletter.
c. The Conestoga Bicentennial Event – September 3, 2005: Gaye reported that the Conestoga Bicentennial committee had their meeting this past Tuesday. Vince was in attendance and presented ideas to tell some history of Conestoga and involve our unit. Luann, Lindsey and Nancy are coordinating a tea and fashion show. Bob Vanderplate got involved with the military but has only come to one meeting. Vince has been scanning newspapers and found evidence of Conestoga and Safe Harbor activity before Gettysburg. There was a Camp Miller. There were a couple companies of infantry. There was civilian activity involved with martial law and civilian aid. With military participation we can do different vignettes or have stations to relay this. We need about 10 guys to do a few scenarios. It is the same weekend as Ridley Creek. A drill wouldn’t be near as exciting. There were Confederate prisoners marched through Conestoga which would make a possible scenario. A mention was made of possibly Mark Boeni being a Confederate soldier. Also the possibility of building rifle pits. Gaye said that sharing the history of Conestoga is exactly what the Conestoga Bicentennial committee is looking for. They are really looking for our unit to get involved. It would be a benefit to Conestoga and a benefit to our unit not to just set up a camp. It would be good for recruiting also. We are officially committed to this event. Sign up. Gaye will bring up the idea of our ladies staging the Conestoga Ladies Aid Society at the next meeting. She will refer them to our website.
d. T-Shirts: Bill Magargle reported we are sold out of Mifflin Guard t-shirts and there are a couple of 3X sweatshirts left. Did we want to do more or do a new design? Joe Coleman suggested we do corp. badges and that he would help with the new design. There was discussion about having them ready for Remembrance Day. Also there was discussion about doing Patriot Daughter t-shirts. We made a profit of around $500. A possibility would be to advertise on the website and have a form available there.
e. Appomattox: Bill Magargle is looking for a good Military contingent.
f. Unit Insurance: Scott Macbeth reported that in talking with Scott Dean he learned that the 81st Unit pays $468.00 for a $2 million liability that covers their unit. It does not cover individuals without paying above and beyond on another policy. This would cover any suits. Scott will call the Carpenters Insurance Company out of Annapolis (one of the few that write them) and look into it.
VI. New Business
a. Preservation: Bill Magargle would like to see our unit give to preservation as stated in the bylaws. Suggestions were Harpers Ferry and Franklin, Tenn. The town will match funds to buy back the battlefield. Discussion was that we gave $200 to Antietam last year and the year before $100 to the Civil War Preservation trust. A motion was made to give $200 to Franklin, TN to help buy the battlefield. It was seconded with all in favor.
b. Marietta Event Sun. Dec. 4: Kim is in contact with the planning committee. Marietta would be willing to pay $250 for us to have Gilmore’s Light Ensemble come. Kim will contact them. Bill Magargle suggested we ask the Swongers to teach us some dances before hand so it won’t seem so monotonous for the spectators watching us try to learn the dances. Don Pentz talked to Carol from Marietta and reported that they will be promoting the dance around town. They may transport our people by bus around to different parts of town to do little scenarios. They want to have participants in the tour to be in period costume. There will be two sessions for town’s people in July. Don will let us know the dates and Gaye and Kim said they would be willing to go depending on the date to advise them what would be appropriate to wear and what wouldn’t. They would not want expensive clothing. Gaye admitted it is difficult because of the cost involved but would advise them that the Simplicity patterns available are acceptable.
c. Haldeman Mansion Event: Kim has been in contact with a lady on the planning committee about our group being involved on the ground floor. Other units have already been invited to attend. There was limited interest among the membership to attend the event, but several members requested more information before committing to the event. Kim will find out more information and bring it up next month. If we do this event we’ll need someone to plan it.
d. Strasburg Memorial Day Parade/Picnic/Meeting-Monday, May 30th: There was discussion about food for the picnic. Kim knows someone she works for who does catering. Scott Macbeth's dad cooks and would be glad to do it for free. He has contacts that do the baking, etc. for him and it would only be the cost. Scott will check on the date with his dad and will know by the next meeting.
e. Landis Valley: We need things to sell. Diane Wepy said she would make cockades. Gaye has buttons. Another group was selling things at the Soldiers Faire last year and had a good supply so we will need to have enough things. We’ll need handkerchief dolls. Kim and Gaye have an idea for pasteboard boxes for hairpins, pills, etc. We spent approximately $200 on supplies last year and we paid this money back with a profit of $158. Gaye made a motion that we earmark $200 from the treasury for supplies as needed. We voted with all in favor.
f. Boy Scout Presentations: Vince Slaugh and James Meisenbach do 20 to 25 minute Boy Scout presentations that include an elementary level drill and a description of the life of a Civil War solider. If you know of any group in need of this contact Vince.
g. Non-profit Corporation: Joe Coleman asked if we mailed the non-profit Corporation to the state? We had not. And whose address should we use as the principle address? Scott Macbeth volunteered we use his.
h. Mother/Daughter Tea and Fashion Show at Wheatland Sat. May 7: Nancy Koch was contacted by Wheatland and asked if our group would be willing to do a fashion show as entertainment for a mother/daughter tea. There was a show of hands as to interest in doing this and a vote to go ahead with this. Nancy and Lindsey passed around a sign up sheet with a list of clothing and accessory suggestions to sign up to model. Men are also needed. There will be two 20-minute shows.
i. Victorian Days at Wheatland Sun. June 26: A reminder was made by Nancy Koch to sign up and be thinking on ideas as to what we could do at this event.
VII. Vince Slaugh gave a presentation on our new website. We were all very much impressed. If there are any articles or any suggestions he is more than willing for us to give them to him. He would like us all to learn to refer to our website for the latest updates. http://unionguard.cciu.org
