The S. H. Zahm Lancaster Patriotic Covers

 

The Civil War featured a deep-rooted patriotism, and patriotic covers (a special type of envelope) provide a creative look at the beliefs, values, and even humor of the era.  Lancaster's most prolific publisher of patriotic covers was S. H. Zahm, located on near Centre Square in Lancaster city.  Zahm also published books in German and English and holds the distinction as the only minter of coins in Lancaster's history.   He also played a role in the founding of the Lancaster County Historical Society.  The following image is an advertisement for Zahm's company probably from the Civil War era:

About twenty different covers printed by Zahm are known to exist.  A collection exists at the library at Harvard University.  The following patriotic covers are from the collection of Vince Slaugh.
